Dr Ken Scally - Chair

Dr Scally is an internationally recognised Environmental Forensic Chemist with over 29 years of experience in organic chemistry analysis, forensic data interpretation, analytical chemistry, and quality management.  Dr Scally enjoys building, collaborating with, and leading multidisciplinary teams to solve complex and dynamic environmental challenges.  Dr Scally enjoys creating opportunities for meaningful technical exchanges with customers.
Dr Scally's expertise lies specifically in organic chemistry, encompassing a deep understanding of degradation pathways, ageing processes, and source correlation indicators pertinent to hydrocarbon releases.

Additionally, Dr Scally harbours a keen interest in the realm of Environmental Analysis and Testing Working Group Group" emerging" chemicals, along with the analytical applications of chemical forensics. Dr Scally's involvement as an expert on the BP Gulf of Mexico Deepwater Horizon oil spill litigation project served as a culmination of his laboratory proficiency and technical acumen.

Dr Scally, currently sits on the EIA Board. 

Hazel Davidson – Deputy Chair 

Hazel Davidson is a highly respected environmental laboratory specialist with more than 40 years of experience in the environmental testing and analysis sector. Throughout her career, she has held a range of technical and leadership positions with leading laboratories, including Alcontrol, DETS and Element, progressing from analytical roles into senior management and technical advisory positions.

Hazel is currently Technical Advisor at Element Laboratories in Deeside, where she provides specialist technical support and leads the development and delivery of training programmes for both staff and clients. Her extensive expertise spans laboratory operations, analytical quality, environmental monitoring, emerging contaminants, and professional development within the sector.

A long-standing advocate for industry collaboration and standards development, Hazel has played an active role on numerous industry committees, including MCERTS, the Environmental Industries Association (EIA), and the Standing Committee of Analysts (SCA). She chaired the SCA committee responsible for the development of the analytical method for asbestos in soils, helping to advance best practice across the industry.

Hazel is a founding member of the Environmental Industries Association and currently serves as Deputy Chair of the EIA Environmental Analysis and Testing Working Group, where she contributes to the development of policy, standards and technical guidance for the environmental monitoring and testing community.

In recent years, Hazel has been closely involved in supporting the environmental sector’s response to emerging contaminants, particularly per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Drawing on her extensive laboratory and technical expertise, she has helped laboratories, regulators, consultants and clients navigate the evolving analytical, regulatory and quality assurance challenges associated with PFAS monitoring and testing.

Her experience extends beyond the UK, having worked on a variety of international projects, including establishing a laboratory in Dublin, supporting pollution monitoring initiatives in the Black Sea, and delivering environmental training programmes for consultants in Jordan on behalf of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

Through her decades of technical leadership, industry engagement and commitment to excellence, Hazel has made a significant contribution to the advancement of environmental analysis and testing both in the UK and internationally.

David Smith - Deputy Chair

David Smith is Technical Director at Eurofins Chemtest and holds an MSc in Analytical Chemistry. With more than 38 years of experience in environmental analysis, he has built an extensive career leading technical innovation and laboratory excellence across the sector.For the past 15 years, David has held Technical Director-level positions within several leading UK laboratories, where he has been responsible for driving scientific advancement, operational performance, and strategic development. In his current role, he oversees all research and development activities, leading the implementation of emerging technologies and process improvements that ensure Eurofins remains at the forefront of its markets.David plays an active role in the development of national and international standards, representing the UK on CEN and ISO committees focused on organic analysis and sample preparation. He has been an active contributor to the Environmental Industries Association (EIA) for more than 20 years and was recently elected Deputy Chair of the Environmental Analysis and Testing Working Group, reflecting his longstanding commitment to advancing best practice and innovation within the environmental sector.
